Are you like me afraid to just toss it out. I know the minute I do it's match will show up on a sweater, or inside a pillow case. So I keep all the single socks with out a match in a dresser drawer. I think some of them have been in there for the last 10 years.

Every seen Seinfeld's routine about escaping socks? I posted it below for your enjoyment. Afterwards let us all know what you do with just one sock. Or maybe your theory as to what happen to it's match.

________

Jerry Seinfeld: Laundry day is the only exciting day in the life of clothes. It is...y’know, think about it. The washing machine is the nightclub of clothes. You know, it’s dark, there’s bubbles happening, they’re all kinda dancing around in there- shirt grabs the underwear, “C’mon babe, let’s go”. You come by, you open up the lid and they’ll- (stiffens up, as the clothes) Socks are the most amazing article of clothing. They hate their lives, they’re in the shoes with stinky feet, the boring drawers. The dryer is their only chance to escape and they all know it. They knew a escape from the dryer. They plan it in the hamper the night before, “Tomorrow, the dryer, I’m goin’. You wait here!” The dryer door swings open and the sock is waiting up against the side wall.He hopes you don’t see him and then he goes down the road. They get buttons sewn on their faces, join a puppet show. So they’re showing me on television the detergent for getting out bloodstains. Is this a violent image to anybody? Bloodstains? I mean, come on, you got a T-shirt with bloodstains all over it, maybe laundry isn’t your biggest problem right now. You gotta get the harpoon out your chest first.

In another routine he said:

‘I admire socks. They have great ambition, great drive. How many times do you do a big load of laundry, you go to the dryer, you take out your socks, you count them up–one of them got out! He escaped. He took off on his own. What are his chances out there? I don’t think they’re good. Sometimes you see a dirty sock by the street there, just one sock. It’s a sock that didn’t make it. I don’t know how they escape. They have their own ideas. Sometimes they’ll hang on a sweater–that’s like a freight car to them …

Orphaned socks are great for keeping your hands warm when you're biking outside in February.

Never considered them for gloves.. ha. Good idea. Come to think of it I bet the white cotton ones would be good for wash clothes in the shower - just fill em up with those little left over soap chips and tie a knot in it. Wa La. Recycling.

What a fun post! Thanks for the Seinfeld quotes.

For the first...year... I just keep putting them back in the laundry basket. I try to buy Friend Hubby a lot of the same style so that when he gets too many holes in one I can replace it with a mismatched one.

Just recently I have discovered a use for socks that are no longer good enough for their intended use or that definitely have no mate. I cut the feet off and use the rest as a sleeve for glass canning jars or glass bottles etc when I'm transporting them.

This is a great thread!

Fill the leftover sock with rice and knot the top. Throw it at the cat when it claws the couch.

Sock puppet! I have book written by Mr. Sock and Nate Wilson. It says on the back cover that Mrs. Sock tragically disappeared in a laundry accident some years back. Make life's trials work for you.

Fill a sock with rice and use it for a hand cushion when using the computer mouse.

Fill it with rice and freeze or microwave it to put on your neck (I use buckwheat, but that's what was handy at the time). Knee socks are better for this.

Cut the toe off tube socks and use them for arm warmers.

Wait for them to turn into hangers. That's what they do at my house...

Oooh I love this one! We have to take canning jars back to my mom and MIL all the time, this would definitely be easier than trying to wrap them all in newspaper.

My folks cut the feet off and use them as insulators for their bottles of water. My nephew plays college baseball so they spend a lot of time in the hot sun watching ballgames and this keeps their bottled water somewhat cool.

I sort of posted this as a joke .. because I know lots of folks keep those socks and don't know what to do with them. Never considered there were actual uses. This is great. THANKS

This as stirred most responses then I though it would. Great ideas. I too have tied a few socks together for tug toys with my dog and also as a toy for my cat. Even filled a sock with cat nip. Works great and keeps her entertained.

When I was bying clothes for my late husband I would buy the same kinds of white and dark socks too. He wasn't interested in style so much. Ha. But I have a bunch of fancy socks with missing mates. I think maybe at this point in life I may narrow it down to two colors and one brand. Make life easier. Ha.

Oooo, I've got to remember the catnip idea when my grandkitties come over! I have some growing right outside the door - when it's not under feet of snow.

Clean spare socks can also be handy bandages or otherwise useful in one's Emergency Supplies.

You hang them up for Santa, of course!

Or, wear them to bed if you are one of those people who slather on a ton of lotion or cream each night, or if you just have cold feet. Nobody cares if your socks match under the blankets.

One of my coworkers said she wears mismatched socks when she wears boots because nobody can tell. I'd worry that something would happen and I'd land in the ER with mismatched socks, though I expect the ER staff has seen worse things and has more important things to think about.

Socks are also good for brushing snow off the car or other wintery tasks where you know your gloves will get wet.

I have to admit...this one perplexed me.

Just make sure your underwear is clean or they'll gossip all day long.

Socks are larval coat hangers. Pretty soon you'll have only mismatched socks and a closet full of coat hangers that you don't know how you got. It's one of those scientific mysteries Nova hasn't covered yet.

Nah, they've seen it all before. They gossip about each other (I used to work in a hospital and one of my best friends is an ER nurse). Now show up with a chicken on your head and they'll talk about you - especially if the chicken is hard to remove...

Chicken on your head? I don't even one to ask. LOL.

But speaking of sock hangers.. what about those little hanger that socks com on. Maybe I should just keep those and make a little sock closet within my regular closet and I can hang my socks back up. I wonder if folks actually do that?

I was thinking about this thread yesterday when shopping at a craft supply store. On a bookrack near the checkout line, I saw a book similar to this one:

Stray Sock Sewing: Making One-of-a-Kind Creatures from Socks

btw... I like your disapproving bunneh in your avatar pic, RedRabbit.

Ahhh...you see, at my house hangers disappear quicker than socks. Amazingly enough they tend to disappear in the Black Hole I like to call "Thing 2's Room". When I started charging him for broken hangers I became $3.75 richer.

What a great looking book idea. It would be fun as a "Stocking Stuffer" for Christmas. Ha. Really it does look like a fun idea for making something out of those stray stocks - give them new purpose and all. I love the little black and white stippred critter on the fron - looks like a cat. Good idea - thanks for sharing that. - EA
