I'm just curiouse. I feel so guilty about the amount of bibles I have and see people around me who have just one trusted bible they love. I have.... 2 niv study bibles-one big and one compact--compact one gets used alot. nlt life application....my current more regular. nlt one year bible nlt pretty pink camoflage zipped compact for taking places. nkjv with jesus' words in red.-hardly touched so far. ncv youth bible Kjv teeny tiny christening present message new testement amp new testement ipod touch with a fab program (that cost less than £5) with....Net,kjv,web,youngs,asv, and one other with all net notes and strongs concordance 1 KJv dated 1650 and three dated in the 1800's On order I have a Nasb and I would like to get a full bible AMP. So like me do you have a collection? Or one favoured? I'm thinking it would be great to settle down and stick to one main one-eventually one without study notes.....I have a feeling that may be my new Nasb. Should I just chill out and not worry?

I've gotten the most use out of the NASB. I rarely look to anything else, even for reading. I do have an Apostolic Old and New Testament in Greek; its interlinear. Sometimes I enjoy looking at what Young's Literal Interpretation says. I can come up with my own paraphrase; It's called the Anderson Paraphrase. Its not available in most markets. Who am I kidding... its not available in any market. But we all have our own understanding of the texts we read. We hope that we are being led by the Holy Spirit into all truth. By the divergence of truth claims from the radicals left and right, and then the centralists who are on the narrow road... well only God knows. I enjoy using mainly one text because I can read from it and remember "its on the upper right section of the epistles" and start looking for a passage that way. By rote memory from having read the same bible in the same format over and again. I'm glad I realized early on that God does not want us confused.

I have a wall full of Bibles, in most every translaton and most known languages of the world, I use mainly the NKJV for when I preach and/or teach, the reason being that it is easier for folks to understand that the KJV, and it still has enough resemblance to the KJV to not put off some of the older folks (with the exception of the KJVO group). When I minister at one of those Church I still use my KJV. For studying I use my NKJV, NASB, Young's Literal, CEV, and whatever else is handy. I also have a myriad on the computer, but I learned how to study from hard copy Bibles, lexicons, Strong's Concordance and dictionary, and a couple of other dictionaries and commentaries; and old habits die hard. Thanks RC

I prefer the King James Bible, but I reference tons of other versions (Even the Roman Catholic ISV). I like to see how a particular verse is laid out in all the different versions. It really helps my understanding greatly.

I usually used spanish Catholic Bible for they paid more attention than if I used a "Protestant" one. Interestingly enough most of the folks had never spent any time in the Scripture at all (of any persuasion). But they did seem more at ease with the Catholic imprint on the cover. Thanks RC

Like many of you I too have several shelves of Bibles including RSV, NRSV, KJV, NKJV, ESV, CEV, NIV, NASB, TEV (the Good News Bible), TLB (a Paraphrase), Beck's An American Translation, The New American Bible, and NLT. Study Bibles include the New Oxford Annotated Bible with Apocrypha, the Concordia Self-Study Bible, the MacArthur Study Bible, and the Harper Collins Study Bible. I also have several interlinears including the NKJV Greek-English and the KJV-NIV Greek. Finally I have NA 26 and 27, Westcott and Hort's Introduction to the New Testament in the Original Greek, The Greek New Testament According to the Majority Text, and the UBS The Greek New Testament 4th Rev Ed.. I should also mention that I also have a copy of the LXX with Apocrapha, the TANAKH, and an Interlinear Hebrew-English Old Testament. For years I wrote notes in my Bibles starting with an RSV and then a NASB and finally a NKJB. The notes from all three of these I put into my own The Arnold Bible Study Companion, which I still add to now and then. A serious Bible student MUST in my opinion be like many of you. Why? Primarily, because of the often different translations of Greek words. It is helpful to look at several translations to help you better understand the meaning of a text.

Glad to know I'm not the only one with a shelf full of bibles. I was mostly an NIV kind of guy, but oddly enough I have recently bought a new KJV which has helped my study tremendously, going from a dynamic equivalence to a more literal translation. Besides, I love reading the KJV out loud...even if it's only to myself!

I myself use primarily one bible, but when I am doing bible study I will always look at several different versions and for paticularly difficult passages sometimes dozens. For those who do not read the original languages, looking at different translations is the absolute best way to recognize passages that were paticularly difficult to translate into english (or any other language for that matter) and that can help you to know where to pay attention in your study so that you understand the issues surrounding variences in different translations.

I agree benelchi, and would only add that reading english versions based upon different manuscript families also helps. I've known a man for years (since 1978) who went during vacations to smuggle bibles into china. He stopped only because his eyes failed him. He was associated with the Friends. Peace, out. quote:

Nope. Only read the King James Version. I probably have fifteen or more, though. I like to have a Bible in every room of the house and of course one in my purse and car. Then I have a couple of different study Bibles, but they are all KJV. I have never had any desire to mess around with other versions as I started reading the KJV when I was 11, which is 50 years ago, and never had a problem understanding it whatsoever. Other versions scare me because I don't want one single word changed or removed or added.

I only use the King James Version. To use others would just lead to confusion, and God is not the author of confusion.

My Grands on one side used KJV, the other side used Williams NT as their main stay because of the Moody Bible connection there. The KJV was written in slightly archaic language when it was composed; editors felt that it lended an air of authenticity. I enjoyed the NASB because it retains some of the same usage of language, especially noticable in the Psalms. I enjoy the NASB because it contains the benefit of different manuscript families. More power to anyone who reads the Bible under submission to the Holy Spirit and Jesus Christ as the revealing interpretor of faith and practice. quote:

I use the Thompson Chain KJV for study along with The Amplified Bible because of the way it expounds ("amplifies") each nuance of the Greek and Hebrew words being used in parentheses. For casual reading I used to read my trusty NASB version until I gave it to my brother who was down on his luck. I've read every version from King James to The Living Bible and have always been inspired when so doing. Still, I prefer the NASB over the NIV, and am simply going to have to replace my NASB some day.

I was almost going to add to my collection today even though I have a nasb in the mail. But I stopped and took a better look online. And made bookmarks to bible gateway, Net, and the translations on crosswalk as well as the crosswalk paralell bible. There is plenty there to keep me busy. I'm not going to buy another bible until one falls apart. I love the crosswalk paralell.

I have to wonder why Jesus used a version of the bible the bible that contained readings that differ from the KJV, didn't he know that the KJV was the only correct version?

To use others would just lead to confusion, and God is not the author of confusion. Way back when I was memorizing hefty chunks of Scripture, the KJV was my favorite. Then, I learned NT Greek, and have done some memory work in that language, though not as much. I've since read the New Testament, dictionary in hand, in Afrikaans, Esperanto, French, Italian, and Turkish. Each time I read the Bible again for the first time, the confusion diminishes. The sense of the richness and depth of God's Word increases. I see things I'd never seen before. When you read the Bible in only one translation, it gets too easy to glide right over the familiar words, and miss what they are saying. The effort of wrapping your brain around a familiar passage when dressed up in a different grammar, a different vocabulary, a different set of associations and connotations, causes new light to dawn upon the territory, and makes overlooked features stand out vividly. A friend of mine, a Turkish grad student, had a very important paper rejected. As I "redlined" the paper, I wrote a verse in the margin for him to consider: Çünkü Tanrı bize korkuluk ruhu değil, ama güç, sevgi, ve özdenetim ruhu vermiştir.[1] A word of encouragement, from God's Word, in his native language, at a painful and anxious moment in his life ... I think a seed was sown there, and pray it will bring forth Kingdom fruit. OTOH, when it comes to laying a foundation in the lives of my children, I prefer the KJV. It is the central masterpiece of the English language. When your kids grow up listening to CDs of the KJV as they go to sleep night after night, they acquire a wonderful mastery of the syntax, and the possibilities, of English prose. Once they grow up, however, I expect they'll use other translations for further insight into the passages they already think they know pretty well. [1] Because / God / to us / fearful / spirit / not, / but / power, / love / and / self-mastery / spirit / He has given.

My Fellow KJV only brothers will have to school me on this one. Theologically this Bible is sound. I haven't read the entire thing but it holds to every single tenant of the faith.
