((reach)) I'm so sorry to hear about your mom. Karen, do you have good shoes? Sometimes that can make a difference in outdoor activities.

I am super proud of myself though, as eating is something to do, and although I am not eating the best things, am keeping the calories down. :) So I had Taco Bell yesterday, but that was all I had all day. So I am getting my comfort carbs. Tonight will be the hardest, as my mom's cousin is flying down and we are meeting up with him and my brother for dinner. Nice to reconnect, but I am going to have to be so careful about my choice. (((((Reach)))))

I was thinking about that as I was doing my walk/jog....I've heard that jogging on non-paved surfaces is easier on the joints. I pondering jogging in the dirt but it's still damp from the winter...

I have fantastic running shoes that are made especially for over pronation. Sadly, I also have several old injuries from years of ballet and falling from the top of the pyramid in cheerleading.

I've biked every single day of March (so far) ~ including today (when it was raining on me!) Monthly Tally for the first 12 days of March: 150 MILES! (Yep, I'm averaging 12.5 miles per day!) And I've been eating "clean", too ... no cheating or eating off of my written daily menus ~ except for Fridays when I get to go out to dinner. Tonight, we're going out to Chevy's ... where I will enjoy 25 tortilla chips with salsa, grilled steak fajitas (no flour tortillas, though, I'd rather have my corn chips!), and I substitute grilled veggies for the rice and beans. And while I do enjoy the small dollop of guacamole, I skip the sour cream. Since I've been eating fish and seafood all week, I'm rather looking forward to having some beef tonight, for a change of pace. So, what are my goals for March? Bike enough to get off daytime insulin (goal accomplished!) Bike more miles than February's 175 miles (in progress) Lose 10-12 pounds for the month (in progress) Maintain daily fiber average of 60g+ (in progress) Eat 6 daily veggie servings / 1 daily fruit serving (in progress) Eat fish/seafood at least 2x per week (in progress)

I ate 1262 calories and burned up 398 calories on my bike. Not bad. Now, what I ate today wasn't all that nutritional, so I am going to work more on that this week. Ofa-those calories seem way too low. Are you seeing a doctor or nutritionist? Surefire way to trash your metabolism is too eat too few calories..... Yeah. I am supposed to be eating (according to calorie count.com) 1750 a day to loose one pound a week. I haven't eaten that many calories since I started logging in what I am eating. Its always around 1400. I just don't feel hungry enough to eat 1750 a day.

Melissa, my sweet friend, I know you don't want to but if you are going to get over the binging of sweets you are going to have to give up sweets and that includes the sugar free junk. Artificial sweetners are over 100x sweeter than sugar and studies show they trigger the responses that make us crave even more sugarey foods, either real or artificial. Please consider it. Please consider learning new ways to handle your stress and emotions. I hate to see you like this. You deserve the best in life. Please don't take that away from yourself.

I would have to agree with this 100% Also, have you thought about switching over to something like South Beach (low carb)? It eliminates all sugars and processed carbs, and could be what you need to get through the temptations and addictions.

I can honestly say that ~ thanks to the time change ~ I've been discombobulated ALL day long today, LOL! Oh well ... such is life, right? I took Saturday off from biking, since I wanted to rest my sore knees/sore butt and because I realized that my last day off from exercising was ... ummm... February 12 (and I think I read somewhere that we should take at least one day a month off from exercise!) Anyway, I got back in the "biking saddle" today and logged 15 miles ... woo hoo. For those of you who are counting, that brings me to 165 miles (so far) for the very merry month of March. (And by way of comparison, can I point out I biked 175 miles in February?) Now that I'm in my fourth month of healthy eating, I've definitely noticed that my weight loss seems to be slowing down a bit ~ which is to be expected. But I am staying true to my healthy eating plan and I'm sticking to my daily exercising, fiber, and veggie goals ... and that's what important to me for this "lifestyle change." I've discovered that -- through Christ -- I can be in control of food, rather than willingly allowing food to have continued control over me ~ and this freedom from bondage is quite liberating. Yesterday I was at the park and was hoisting a 50-pound sack of cracked corn out of my trunk so that I could feed the ducks, and I couldn't help but reflect that I've lost more than the equivalent weight of that sack of corn ... and I no longer have to hoist it out of cars or carry it around with me, anymore. Now THAT is freedom! So ... my focus turns to this upcoming week .... my birthday week, actually. (Yep, I turn 45 on Wednesday!) On Monday, I will do my official weekly weigh-in and will get to visit with my friend Heather. And, of course, biking. On Tuesday, I will get to see my friend Laura and, of course, biking. On Wednesday, I will bike in the morning before heading to my counseling appointment in the afternoon -- followed by dinner out with a girlfriend for Chicken Pho and (gasp) 2-3 fried eggrolls! Thursday? More biking. Friday? More biking, and dinner with my friend Stacey. Yep ... eating out TWICE in one week .... OH MY GOSH! hee hee hee. Don't worry, I'll be good (I promise).... and I will make sure I bike enough to offset any extra calories.

My week has gone pretty well. Yesterday, I was over by about 200 calories for my daily goal. Too many sausages at a school pancake breakfast didn't help me any! The rest of the week went well and I am definately stepping up my veggie intake. It helps that I bought 5 bags of already-made, organic salad mix. They were .99 a piece so they will help me stay healthy and keep my grocery bills down.

Well, I got on the scale for the first time in months. I've been getting fatter and fatter - I don't even feel like I recognize my body any more - all of my clothes are tight. I had a very stressful year and have put on a whopping 35 pounds - on top of the 5 or so that I put on the year before. When I got on the scale, I felt horrible, but not devastated as in the past. But then again, I feel that the Lord has been telling me for almost two years now to change my eating habits and to exercise. So, now I'm finally ready to do it. I eat emotionally, so I've got a plan in place to deal with that, I think. I've always been missing emotional support. Now, I think I have it. I have friends that are going to exercise and we are all going to walk together a couple of days a week. I missed the weight watchers free registration, but I'm going to register this wednesday, even if I have to pay to do it. And one of the churches that I go to - they have lots of people who can pray with you at any time. And, I've learned that losing weight is just a matter of falling down and getting up and falling down and getting up and falling down and getting up - until it becomes a habit. Mostly, I know I'm feeling led to eat foods that are primarily those from the Daniel Fast. That doesn't mean that I don't eat protein regularly or have a snack occasionally - but that the foods that I'm supposed to eat on a regular basis should be very much like Daniel ate. I don't feel like I can even do that to be honest - only God can help me in this area.

Karen, Thank you for your wonderful post! It's difficult to cut out sugar and sugar free foods, but I think that I can do it with God's help. Today was a good day. I had LOTS of exercise today: walking up and down the basement stairs carrying stuff, packing, pushing and lifting heavy boxes, bending over to tape boxes, etc. What a busy day! My eating habits weren't too good, but they weren't all that bad either. Because we had company and they were working on the house, there weren't any regular mealtimes, except breakfast. I ate cereal with milk and had coffee for breakfast, a slice of processed cheese and milk for a snack, a cheese sandwich made with white bread (the only kind in the house at the moment) for lunch, a banana for a snack, 1 large cheeseburger with ketchup, mustard and pickles & french fries from Sonic, a big bowl of sugar free ice cream with sugar free hot fudge sauce for supper. Right now, I'm eating two bowl of tortilla chips, not the best snack in the world, but at least it doesn't have sugar in it. I had coffee, diet soda and water at various times throughout the day, but probably not enough water. I'll try to improve on this tomorrow. I have a question, do you ever feel like you HAVE to eat something, or it will go to waste? That's why I'm finding it difficult to try to go totally sugar and sugar free, because I feel like I need to eat up all of the sugar free foods here at the house. I'm the only one that eats it and it will just go to waste if I don't. Another problem I have is concerns about hurting people's feelings if I don't eat the food that they've prepared for me. How do you handle that problem in your life? Please pray for me to make some wise decisions regarding my health. ETA: I just noticed the post number for this post. Creepy!

Official weigh in today! I'm down 4.8 lbs from last week! Woohoo! Last month's plateau is history! I feel so good about my progress! Melissa-- I USED to feel really bad about "wasting" food...however, when I started eating healthy I realized it felt really good to put that food in the trash can and not in my body. A little wasteful, yes--- but did I really need to buy it in the first place? Remember that those starchy foods may not have sugar, but when you eat it and the food begins to break down it will turn into sugar - which will fuel your cravings for MORE sugar/starches. Also, I agree with hislamb re: other's food. It's okay to let them know that you are on a healthy eating plan. Last week when I switched over to low-carb we had dinner at my MIL's house. She generally has a lot of vegetables anyway, so I passed on the potatoes and carrots and had only what fit into my plan. She asked me about it and I told her that I was eating low carb. She understood, and was actually impressed when I turned down dessert. Then this weekend I was at two birthday parties - and each time I politely refused cake (although I did have 1/4 bite of my husband's cake at one party just to taste). It's not only being accountable to yourself, but when you let others know that you are trying to be healthier, in general they will understand.

I had another thought. (I've had a lot of thoughts this morning). Re: wasted food...if you have non-perishable foods that have not been opened yet, you can always donate them to a food pantry. If your church does not have a food pantry they may know of other churches that do. The church that I work at always takes donations (even junk food and hands it out as a luxury item).

Melissa, you are more than welcome. I want the best for you! You have got some good advice. As far as the junk food, trash it. Better trashing the food than your body. I agree that I would probably gett rid of all the french fries, tortilla chips, and the rest if the carbs like that. I would really focus on lean protein, lots of steamed and roasted veggies and some fruit As far as people's feelings over food, you accept the fact that you are not responsible for their emotions. For example, my mil is still pouting over the fact that we would not eat her fattening, processed foods for our Thanksgiving visit. My husband told her before hand that we ate a whole foods diet. He told her we would take care of our own food. We were not asking her to change her cooking or buy anything. Our visit comes and she overcooked an obscene amount of green bean casserole, carrots cooked in cream and cheese, pototoes of all varieties etc. We politely ate our own food and she was furious. That is not our problem

Funbetty, sadly the type of foods she served literally makes my husband and I sick. That didn't matter, we needed to eat her food. It was a bit bizarre. I know some peole time up emotions in food. She took it as an insult that we didn't eat. We ate Thanksgiving dinner it was just the rest of the visit that we reverted to our own food.

I would think that would be reasonable, imo. It's sad when people who you're related to won't support your healthy lifestyle...
