I am arranging for a speaker for my daughter's Native American studies class. They are in 3 and 4 grade and I found this great speaker who seems awesome. The problem is the school doesn't have it in the budget. He is only 100.00 and compared to the speaker they had last year that wasn't even Native American at 185, that is cheap, but they might not be able to get the money. We don't really have it, but I offered to pay for it anyway because I do think that it is important that the kids get a clear view of what it was really like.
I don't think the teachers would let me pay for it, but they just might. So is that a good thing or a bad thing? I just want the kids to have the experience.

I'm glad you weren't too late Roberta.
N went to school late today; we let him sleep in and then decided he was OK to go; so I think he got there towards the end of his first hour class. N wasn't quite sure when first hour ended.

If you are OK with paying for it Tracy, I think it is a good thing. I don't think we do a good job of teaching our kids about Native Americans and who they are today. Any other place the money could come from?
Grrr to school budget cuts. K is taking painting this semester, but little to no money to buy more paint. They were out of white paint for a while. They did get some more, but the semester isn't even half over. And I paid a fee ($10.00 I think) for her to take this so I'd expect there to be supplies. I'd buy K paints myself, but I think that K would be weird with that idea.
Oops, I wrote brrrr to school budget cuts first; yeah, I'm a little chilly this morning.

Yes, I am ok paying for it and I just happened to run across this guy who does this. He is registered with a tribe around here somewhere, serves as Master of Ceremonies at events, and teaches teachers how to teach about Native Americans. I guess we do have some law that dictates how they are to teach on that topic and he does seminars and things like that as well as class presentations for any age group.
Last year they had some group from an organization that wasn't even Native American and like you, I don't think they do a good enough job teaching it either. We learned that Christopher Columbus came here, saw the friendly native people and took some back to show the queen. They didn't mention the slavery, torture, and all of the other things they did to them other than the fact that for their own survival, they created reservations for the Native Americans. They skipped the poverty, alcoholism, and all of the other things that go along with that even today.
This guy is also almost half the price of what they paid for their speaker last year and even the teachers were not impressed with that presentation.

Ok, it looks like MN is back on. Hubby isn't too thrilled, but we are going to let his company pay for his room, upgrade and pay the difference. It is only going to be an extra 70.00 per night. How can you pass that up for a two bedroom suite?

I remember feeling that way too when we first put Ty in Public school. I'm living proof that things do all work out for the best to those who trust God's leading. He struggled for a little bit, but that's because he was bored, but once we got that all worked out things went much smoother!
Day 2 of Jungle Book tryouts are over. He just has to be there tomorrow morning for the final session of try-outs.

I made a fleece poncho tonight for R. This pattern. I still have to fringe the bottom.
I'm glad this week is over, and only 3 days next week (conferences). R was a little late this morning, and she's been crabby lately. I think she is still worn out from being sick last week.

The news is talking about how our school district is facing some tough changes to make up for shortfalls in the budget and some extra curricular & summer programs and teachers may be on the chopping block, but anything that affects student achievement will not be touched.

HA. HA. HA!!!
Let's see - fewer teachers larger class sizes - student achievement WILL begin to drop.
Let's see - fewer teachers fewer class choices and options for high schoolers, thus larger class sizes in the remaining classes.
Of course it was mentioned that athletics teams may have to start footing more of the costs involved with their activities. Theatre and music have been doing that for YEARS!!!!!!!
Of course they say they are taking parents concerns into consideration. -- Now that I HIGHLY doubt. They've never listened to us before.
Sigh. . .
I'm done ranting.

Garcy, didn't your school go through cutting teachers at this time last year? I seem to remember that. I know times are tough and money is tight, but there has to be some way for them to keep some of their programs, but then again, who am I to talk, I offered to pay for a speaker for the entire third and fourth grades so they can have one.
Tomorrow is parent teacher conferences. I have to go talk to Jake's science teacher because he is having trouble taking tests in that class. Homework is fine, us quizzing him is fine, but when he takes the test, that is where he loses it. I am at a loss. The teacher just tells him to calm down and I think he has test anxiety. I don't want to make excuses, but if he is passing homework with A's and B's, and we can quiz him at home and he can answer questions from the test, then what else can it be? I hope we can resolve this because it is an advanced class so in order for him to truly pass, he needs a C or he has to re-take it.

I know I've been talking budget issues for at least a couple of years now.
I guess I got to ranting because it was mentioned on the news - FINALLY!!! maybe now enough parents will hear about it that someone besides me and a select few will make a stink.
Not that making a stink does any good.
Science fair projects are taking up ALL my spare time.

Aryn's has been done since the 7th.
Ethan still has two more runs of his experiment and to type up his results and such and put his board together.
Zoe just has to put her board together.
Ty THANKFULLY didn't have to do one.
An area children's choir has been invited to attend the World Choir Olympics that will be held in China in July! This is a BIG deal because only 4 choirs in the US have been asked to participate! Bigger still is that this is a choir where no child is turned away. If the child wants to sing and they and their parents are willing to sign the code of conduct and performance contract they are more than welcome participate.

Garsy, that is so cool about the choir! I understand your frustrations with the school budget. We're losing some very good teachers this year as a result of cuts. I know of two elementary school teachers that we will lose next year from our school. We may lose the self-contained gifted and talented classes for elementary, too. HS almost lost chorus last year, may actually lose it this year. Re: athletic budget - Our athletic booster club has brought most of the money into the athletic budget for years, but it seems they've finally decided to help someone other than just football for the last couple of years. The band has no budget, though the school will help with minimal expenses. The band booster club has to do everything else. Grrrrr...
Tracy, it does sound like test anxiety with Jake. I hope you and teacher can design a plan to help.

I'm better today.
Frustrated that they are considering dropping many foreign languages from the middle school within the next 4 years. In other words next years 7th graders will be able to start their first year of one of three languages and finish that first year of that language in 8th grade, but next years 6th graders will not have as many options. They've already eliminated German, the next one on the chopping block is French. Then there will be a fight between Latin and Spanish. Ty had a choice between 4 languages. Aryn will have only 3. Ethan will have 2 and I have no idea what the deal will be once Zoe gets there.
Brian and I spent the morning at the middle school doing some work for Aryn's English teacher. Apparently we were the only parents that offered to help out! I told her to not hesitate to call or send a note home anytime she needed extra help.
Speaking of Brian! We got an e-mail Friday afternoon at 4:45 from one of the jobs Brian has a chance at stating that the first 34 folks that replied to the e-mail would be eligible to take further testing for the positions they are hiring for!! Brian answered the e-mail within 20 minutes and he got the notice today that he was one of the first 34 and is scheduled for further testing tomorrow at 6PM! PLEASE continue to pray that he does well on these tests and assessments and gets this job!
Tonights a busy night. Ty and Aryn will be home within in a few minutes, then Zoe will be home in an hour. I pick Ethan up at 4:30, a friend of Zoe's from the babysitters, and then home to pick up Zoe and straight to basketball! Two games tonight. Then home to finish Science fair boards.

Mama, glad school went well and ya, how did you do? I was a wreck for about a week.
The thread about sex ed and "family" diversity had me wondering if any of you have evey encountered some of the things that were mentioned. Have u ever pulled you kids out of a class or had them sit out of a book u didn't care for or a certain topic the teacher was discussing?
I pulled dd out of class in 4th grade when the teacher chose to read Harry Potter because at the time we weren't allowing it to be read. We have since changed our minds and I know dd has read all of them. She wasn't alone either, another parent wasn't crazy about it and had their child pulled out. Ds sat through jr hi sex ed and it was ok. Dd missed out because we had her finish jr hi at the christian school she was attending.
Now, both are in public high school and I haven't seen anything yet that I really disapproved of. Dd even had a guy frined open up to her and tell her that he was gay. I thought it was wonderful that he felt comfortable to open up to her. We talked about this and she knows to look for oportunities to share Jesus with him and the others.

We've had opportunities to pull our kids out a few times over potentially controversial subjects. However, after talking with the teacher about how the material/video was going to be represented or how it would be used to teach the concept, etc, we decided to allow our kids to take part. It helps that we knew the teachers and what values they held, as well. If we had any questions about any of it, we definitely would have held them out. The kids have also brought home anything they were concerned about, and we've talked about it from the Christian perspective. Sometimes they've spoken to the teachers themselves.
