Alright, all of you must know by now that I love to find old cassettes and lps of gospel groups. I record them to the PC and make a cd copy. I also like to include biographical info on the artists. I specalize in the "unknown" groups...i.e, local groups that were never professional. As a result, I have an odd assortment of recordings. Anyway...

Went thru Nicholson, GA earlier on my way tp Athens (home of the Dogs!) and stopped at an antique store to go thru their 1,000+ lp collection and found about 18 lps. Some artists I heard of, some I had not. Maybe y'all can help:

Artist: Lp Title: Contact Address
Eleventh Hour Singers Smile God Loves You Seveirville TN
House Family God's Valley Of Peace Maidson GA
Sounds Of Home Where The Love of God Cumming GA
Came Down
Victors Qt Do You Know Jesus Ramseur NC
Westbrooks Family There Is A River (no location given)
Sounds Of Victory He Wrote My Name Walhalla SC
Looper Trio Down Home Gospel (no location given)
Masters Qt *self-titled (no location given)
Faithmen Qt Touring That City (no location given)
Davis Trio You Maybe Living When Dallas GA
Jesus Comes
Llewallyn Family No One To Welcome Me Athens GA
Home
Christian Echoes In That Wonderful Country Gainesville GA
Trav'lers If Not Today, Then Maybe (just lp; no jacket)
Tomorrow

All of these seem to have been recorded in the 1970s...judging from the outfits and hairdos. I can't believe people went out in public to sing looking like that! Anyway, does anyone have any info on these? I m surprised that I don't know the bands from Athens and Gainesville since I live right between the two. I know at one time there was a Masters Qt in Gainesville, but I don't recognize any of the men in the photo.

You could probably contact Keith at www.thedavistrio.com. I believe their group is still performing in the Atlanta area.

I wish I had the "know how" to put casettes and lps on cds. I have so many that I'd like to do that with.

Local/non professionals can be very good. I've seen many who are just as good and some who are better than some professional groups. Of course there are some bad ones out there too! (smile)

Please let me know what equipment I need to do what you do.

Have you ever ran into any LPS/Cassettes of The Sheltons?

They were really good. They may have been professional?

Hey Eson: I grew up and was rasied in Sevierville, Tn: Can you tell me more about the Eleventh Hour Singers? Do you have that album cover? I would like to know the names of those singers? I know that the Church Of God used to have a training school where they taught people how to sing by shape notes. Bobby Helton, my grandfather taught at that school. I am wondering if these singers did not emerge from that. This just has me puzzled as to who these singers are? Let me know if you can get there names. Thanks!!

Well, there is no actual listing of the vocalists (or anyone else!) but there is a backliner note on the jacket. A few points stick out:

There is a mention of a Don, Voncile and Sammy who had a group called the Sammy Hall Singers. It seems that the "Eleventh Hour Singers" were a recreation of the Sammy group. From the rest of the text, the members of this group were:

(1) Don
(2) Mike
(3) Mark
(4) Beverly
(5) Tony

Judging from the text, nos 2 & 3 were the children of no 1. The notes are addressed to "Bernice and Don"...I assume the parents of nos 2 & 3. The notes are signed "Mom And Dad"; in the text, they are the grandparents of nos 2 & 3...but from which side, I can't determine.

However, there are no last names mentioned. Send me your email and I will send you a pic of the cover and the list of songs.

I first remember Sammy Hall from back in the 60's...The Sammy Hall Singers....he and his 2 sisters traveled quite extensively presenting their music. Then I remember back in the 80's he got hooked up with a fellow by the name of Dexter Yeager who apparently was a huge name in the Amway business. Sammy entertained at all of Dexter Yeagers conventions nation wide. I think he did extremely well with that. If I remember correctly, his home outside of Sevierville, Tn had big iron gates with musical notes and his initials on the gates to his driveway. I think he eventually sold that house. It had a great view .

You could probably contact Keith at www.thedavistrio.com. I believe their group is still performing in the Atlanta area.

Snarfie,
This LP isn't by The Davis Trio that you are familiar with. You are thinking of the father/sons trio from Rome, GA consisting of Bob, Keith & Kevin Davis. The group on the LP is from Dallas, GA, and isn't related to the Rome group. (Although one of the gentlemen is also named "Keith Davis" in the group on this record.) You may remember Arlene Sizemore who sang in my group, Mercy Road several years ago. She is the female singer on this LP, and was (at the time) married to Keith. The third member was Keith's brother, Tim. Some may remember a few years ago, that Keith and Arlene's daughter, Sondi (pronounced "Sunday") sang with her Dad and Uncle as 'The Davis Family', and recorded with Lamp Music. Hopefully this clears up some of the confusion regarding these two wonderful singing families!

Eson,
You mentioned an LP by "The Sounds Of Home". That group consisted of a fairly well-known songwriter, Morris Stancil, Two sisters, Wanda Jones & Brenda West, and their father, Rev. Elijah Cowart (who is now deceased). Morris is the author of several great songs made famous by The Kingsmen, The Primitive Qt., The Inspirations and The Singing Echoes. You may remember some of his songs: "Beautiful Home", "Because He Loved Me" and "I Found A Treasure". I understand that he still sings on a limited basis with his son, Greg. Back in their heyday, The Morris Stancil Singers were one of the top regional groups in North Georgia. Morris played briefly for The Perrys back in the early 80s, before starting The Sounds Of Home.

Ok...now I know who you are talking about. I have two other lps by "Morris Stancial And The Sounds Of Home". I don't know why I did not make the connection on this lp! I did not know that Morris had played for the Perrys however.

I the "Live Naturally" lps from 1980 that the Kingsmen did "Beautiful Home" on and the Primitve's recording "Because He Loved Me". Thanks!
